I am altogether looking to buy the iPad, and I am excited to see what kinds of appz and games will be sold for it. I just don't understand some of the nitpicky criticisms in this website. Size of the bezel?? LOL!

Can't really respond to the dev environment point (but to say that I never thought there would be one, and it's a pain in the ass to develop on small screens).

As to the stylus, though, I'm sure that there will be third-party styli just like there are for the iPhone. It's not impossible to make a capacitive stylus...

I'm going to have to disagree with you, James, at least about that very last point.

I'm vaguely in the market for a netbook-type computer: something portable (I don't own a laptop right now, which can get annoying) and cheap. I plan to use whatever I get to program and browse the web (probably in that order, which makes me a non-average user). So when I heard about the upcoming release of an apple tablet, I started to pay attention, although I had initial doubts about whether it would be cheap. So when it was finally announced, I looked at the price tag and started to get excited: this could be just what I was looking for.

Then I realized what was missing: vim and a stylus. By not being a real computer, the iPad is suddenly almost useless to me. Cool programs and customization that I have running on my desktop (like the ability to input commands by whistling) are immediately out (unless I want to port them and get Apple to sign off on them, which costs money). Plus, development environments (like vim, vim, and if you're desperate, Eclipse) aren't there.

And then there's the issue of a stylus. The only reason that I'd even be interested in shelling out for a tablet (although in this case the iPad is almost cheap enough for this not to matter) is so that I could do some art, and mess around with sketch recognition. While I have nothing but respect for people who do finger painting, the precision of a long, rigid object grasped with an entire hand* is actually really useful.

In short: no, I'm not going to want one, even though I thought I might.
